KENYAN rOCK IS THE WAY FORWARD

Recently, I joined a Rock Whatsapp Group and it has been pretty fun learning about what other Kenyan Rockers (even a TZ one) listen to, share music and stuff. But the downside of this has been that I have come to realize that very few people appreciate Kenyan Rock (pssst let alone appreciate but rather know if it exists).
So as one is initiated into these groups, they have to state their favorite bands and sadly, (you guessed it) there are few people who state a Kenyan Rock Band in their 'Playlist'.
Here in Kenya we have very good bands that are at an international level. The aim of this piece is to shed light on these bands.

1. Parking Lot Grass
This as one fellow rock head said is the Linkin Park of Kenya. ParkingLotGrass is the sound of rock music from Kenya supported by loyal followers who go by the name #TeamPLG. To get their new single Rain Man go to http://www.parkinglotgrass.com/

2. Dove Slimme
This is another band that is causing airwaves in Kenya.
3. Last Year's Tragedy (LYT)
This Metalcore band can easily be the best Metal band in Africa.

4. Jivu Hai
A black metal kinda of band with the creepiest video ever. If you do black metal then this is your band. To get their lyrics click here

5. Murfy's fLaw
Many people say that this band is overrated but it contains some very serious rockers giving you music from various ethnic groups and diversities.
6. Koinange Street Avengers
If you are into Indie Rock then this is your band.
7. Rock of Ages
This is a Christian Based band that is said to be the pioneer of Kenyan Rock being in existence as from 2001.
8. Claymore Project
This is an up n coming band that is promising lots of good music.

To get the feel of the music these bands produce look them up on the web and also at local gigs and you will not be disappointed.

Murfy's Flaw

This is a Kenyan Band whose members are predominantly females with only one dude in the group. It is by far the most famous band in Kenya. I tweeted them asking about their name and the source. This is what i got:

So I wonder if I was lied to ama What is????

Kenyan Whatsapp Group Taking Rock to Another Level

People form tribes it in our nature. So even as the world undergoes the current technological evolution people still stick to this nature. It is under this that using one off the most common social networks in Kenya that people of a similar affliction have come together under one unified tribe of rock music listeners known as Rock Head Nation.  Its in this community that people from all ways of life who listen to rock find a sanction in which they associate freely. In this sanction we share our hopes ,dreams, jokes and  opinions on matters affecting our daily lives.Despite the different characters projected as unique to to different members we manage to pull through every day living life a day at a time. As family,we are proud of our status. An oasis of bewilderment as the rock heads who once strangers to one another coalesce into a unit to keep the cogs of machine.i.e. Rockhead nation running through the ages . Whether musical or lyrical we all dance to the same tune we will endure through all that life throws before us because we are the Rockheads and we listen 2 the rock of ages .....

Linkin Park is Coming to Kenya

You Wish...
If you want to hire your favorite International Rock Band for a private or corporate event be sure to spend some big bucks as they do not come in cheap.  Also, they require you to board them and even provide private transport for them and their equipment. Figure hiring two private jets to bring over a band to perform for just three hours tops. Expensive./\
Many, including me, wonder why there have never been any international rock band coming to Kenya to perform. Here is the reason:
To hire a band like Linkin Park costs you $600,000+ for one single event. To get the magnitude here lets do some Maths. Assuming a dollar goes for 80 bob Linkin Park will have to be paid 48 million shillings just to perform. And remember you have not included the costs incurred by logistics, media among others. So getting an international rock band in Kenya to perform will be a pipe dream.
The funny thing is that Linkin Park is not that expensive look at these bands and you will want to be a Rockstar just like the Nickleback Song.
Take a look at some of the dough that some bands and individuals scoop just for one performance
Talk of the devil....Nickelback | $1,200,000
MGMT | $180,000+
Maroon 5 | $420,000+
Matchbox Twenty | $480,000+
Neon Trees | $60,000+
Paramore | $240,000+

Red Hot Chili Peppers | $1,198,800+
Adam Lambert | $180,000+
Daughtry | $360,000+
Skillet | $18,000+
AC/DC | $240,000+
Aerosmith | $1,199,999+
Kelly Clarkson | $360,000+
Kimbra | $60,000+
Red Hot Chili Peppers | $1,198,800+
The Script | $240,000+
Yeah Linkin Park is Coming to Kenya in your dreams. Peace

If Avril Lavigne was my Daughter...

When she is growing up my daughter will be weaned on rock music, she will live that rock lifestyle, we will even form our own band. This may earn me a bullet by a parent who thinks he/she is sane enough by calling rock music all those nasty names.

I'd rather have her being called a weirdo than she start going to clubs (even churches nowadays) panty less. Dancing to some shitty riddims that go like 'i got girls that i fuck once and never fucks again' ooooh blimey. She'd rather have all those piercings all over than go daggering with some half stoned dimwits in clubs while drinking akina Meakins, Bluemoon and the whole nine yards.
Lemme ask you a question though it is stupid; Who would you like for a daughter, Nikki Minaj or Avril Lavigne???

You guessed my answer right, I'll go for Avril Lavigne, I do not wanna see my daughters booty all over with some young niggers lusting for it.

I do not want a blonde in my house. I want a real girl who is in touch with reality. For em rock girls salute.

The Rock Band: Dove Slimme

We have a new back ground, what do you think, its aweeeessssooome. Just look at the girl man, you just fall in love with Rock maze. Ooooh where were we, eeeh I was to talk about DoveSlimme. I do not know where they go the name or the origin of it (when I hook up wit em I'll let u know, that is if am lucky).

So DoveSlimme, I think this is the only rock band in Kenya that has their own Website. This band is in touch with technology and no celeb in Kenya has such an awesome site. Ooooh got a little carried away. So DoveSlimme was conceived in 2007 by Dimmz who does vocals. But the Band was not born til 2010. There had been no perfect mix of band members til 2010. It is a rock band based in Nairobi, Kenya. And they are ruling the airwaves around here. The band consists of 5 members; Dimmz who does rhythm & vocals, Greg who does lead guitar, Jillian the ka only gal who does Vocals
, Maina(bass) and Ainea(drums).

They released their first single on February 2012, Yelele. It got massive airplay on Radio. It topped local charts in a couple of weeks with many of Kenyan Rock fans staring to identify with the band. Their second single was Party at the Barn, which also shot to the top of the charts within a few weeks of airplay.
The Band has won the Battle of the Bands 3 times and also became the Best Performing Band at Ocktoberfest 2010.

Weird Rock Names (Kenyan Version)

Rock Bands are known for their controversial and somewhat weird band names like the European Band Rotting Christ, Metallica, Black Sabbath among others. But this is not only limited to abroad. Even Kenyan Rock Bands have not been left behind. We have: The Murfy’s Flaw, Parking Lot Grass, Last Year's Tragedy Claymore Projects, Jivuhai (Live Ashes), Dove Slimme and the king of the cheesiest names ever the Koinange Street Avengers.
When you hear these names in a concert you may expect a Scandinavian Band to come forth to the stage but it is our own boys and girls rocking our heads off.

Let's Rock

This Blog will look at Kenyan Rock Bands and the Rock Scene. Little is known of the great Rock that comes from Kenya and this blog will look into that.
It was partially inspired by my girl Debbie the Rocker and the Dove Slimme website which is cool www.doveslimme.com
